Alpine A390: Brand’s First SUV Now Available for Order, Starting at £61,390

Alpine has begun taking orders for the A390, its first-ever sports utility vehicle (SUV). Priced from £61,390, it undercuts the Porsche Macan Electric by over £7,000 while offering a high-performance electric powertrain. The A390 is positioned as a driver-focused alternative to mainstream electric SUVs, emphasizing agility and handling over pure range or efficiency.

Pricing and Trim Levels

Currently, the A390 is available in two trims: the entry-level GT at £61,390 and the Premiere Edition at £65,390. Deliveries are expected this summer. A higher-performance GTS model, with 464bhp, will arrive later in the year, starting at £69,390. This pricing strategy places the A390 competitively against rivals such as the BMW iX3 (from £53,250) and Mercedes GLC Electric (from £60,350), though it remains more expensive than the BMW.

Performance and Powertrain

All A390 variants feature a tri-motor setup (two rear, one front) providing all-wheel drive. The GT and Premiere Edition produce 395bhp and 661Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. The GTS boosts output to 464bhp and 824Nm, reducing the sprint to 3.9 seconds—faster than a Porsche Macan 4S. Top speeds reach 124mph (GT/Premiere) and 137mph (GTS).

The A390’s 89kWh battery delivers up to 341 miles of range for the GT and Premiere, dropping to 312 miles for the GTS. DC fast charging at 190kW replenishes the battery from 15% to 80% in under 25 minutes. Weighing 2,124kg, the A390 is notably heavier than Alpine’s lightweight A110 coupe, but the brand has prioritized a driver-centric experience through precise torque vectoring and responsive handling.

Design and Interior

The A390’s exterior retains elements from the earlier concept, including a full-width lightbar and sleek daytime running lights. Key features include flush door handles, a sloping fastback roofline, and a 532-liter boot.

Inside, the A390 features a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12-inch central touchscreen, sharing components with the Renault Scenic E-Tech but customized with Alpine-specific software including lap timers and G-force readouts. Standard equipment includes a 13-speaker sound system, heated steering wheel, and wireless smartphone connectivity. The Premiere Edition adds unique 20-inch wheels, blue brake calipers, and electric sport seats with massage function.

Future Expansion

The A390 is the second all-electric model in Alpine’s lineup, following the A290 hot hatch. The company plans to launch seven new electric vehicles by 2030, including additional SUVs, a new A110 sports car, a roadster, and a four-seat coupe reviving the A310 nameplate.

Alpine aims to carve out a niche for itself as a performance-focused EV brand, blending sportiness with everyday usability. The A390 is a key step in this direction, offering a compelling alternative to more conventional electric SUVs by prioritizing driving dynamics and engaging technology.
