The Volkswagen Group offers a wealth of compact SUV options, but the Audi Q3 and Cupra Formentor stand out as premium, sporty choices. The Q3, a proven seller, has been updated with larger dimensions, improved driving dynamics, and more tech. But can the Cupra Formentor, with its bolder styling and performance focus, deliver a similar experience?
Formentor’s Edge: Sporty Appeal
The Cupra Formentor was the first model to launch under the Cupra brand, separate from SEAT. A 2025 update introduced a more aggressive front grille and refined technology. While an older design than the Q3, it offers similar powertrains – including high-performance petrol and plug-in hybrids – at comparable prices. The key question is whether the Formentor’s sporting edge outweighs the Q3’s refinement.
Q3: Refined Comfort, Tech-Forward
The latest Audi Q3 starts at around £39,000 and rises to over £50,000 in top trims. Buyers have choices between 1.5 and 2.0-liter petrol engines, a diesel option, and a 1.5 e-hybrid. All models come with an automatic transmission. The Q3 stands out with its adaptive suspension, which balances comfort and sportiness effectively, though it’s only available in the most expensive Edition 1 trim as a £2,550 upgrade.
The Q3 also features innovative “double-deck” stalks for indicators and wipers, mounted behind the steering wheel for intuitive operation.
Formentor: Performance and Value
The Cupra Formentor starts slightly lower at £35,295 and offers trim levels from V1 to V3, plus a Tribe Edition. Engine options include a 1.5 turbo petrol with manual or automatic transmission, as well as two e-Hybrid variants. High-performance 2.0 TSI versions deliver exhilarating acceleration, and the Formentor’s lower center of gravity enhances handling. Adaptive dampers in the VZ models further refine the driving experience, offering a blend of comfort and performance.
Head-to-Head: On the Road
The Audi Q3 excels in balance, providing a comfortable ride with precise handling. The e-hybrid delivers smooth electric assistance when available. The Formentor, however, feels more aggressive, with a lower driving position and stiffer chassis. The 328bhp 2.0 TSI version transforms it into a hot hatchback on twisty roads.
Tech and Practicality
Both cars feature advanced LED lighting systems. The Q3’s tech is more responsive, while the Formentor offers a sharper design. Interior space is comparable, though the Formentor has slightly more rear legroom, while the Q3 offers more elbow room. Both vehicles have decent boot space, but the PHEV versions reduce cargo capacity.
Verdict: Audi Q3 Takes the Lead
The Audi Q3 emerges as the winner due to incremental improvements in comfort, technology, and overall driving experience. Its refined interior, spaciousness, and balanced handling make it a well-rounded choice. While the Cupra Formentor offers a sportier alternative, the Q3’s higher quality and superior refinement justify its position as the top pick in this segment.
The Formentor remains a strong contender, especially for buyers prioritizing driving fun, but the Q3’s overall package is more polished and refined.
