The latest Audi Q5L, a long-wheelbase version tailored for the Chinese market, is now available for pre-order through the FAW-Audi joint venture. Pricing starts at approximately $44,500 USD, extending up to $54,700 USD for higher trims.
This model marks a significant step forward by integrating Huawei’s advanced Qiankun ADS system – including dual LiDAR sensors – for Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. Official sales are expected to begin in early 2026.
Evolution of the Q5L
The Audi Q5 first debuted globally in 2008, with localized production in China starting in 2010. The long-wheelbase Q5L variant arrived in 2018, catering to the Chinese preference for spacious interiors. A mid-cycle refresh occurred in 2021, and now, the third-generation Q5L is set to build on that success.
This latest iteration represents a measured expansion: its dimensions are now 4842mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1660mm high, with a 2945mm wheelbase. Compared to the outgoing model, this means a 72mm increase in length and 38mm in wheelbase. This change emphasizes interior comfort, a key driver in the Chinese luxury SUV segment.
Key Features & Tech
The Q5L incorporates several design updates, including flush-mounted door handles – a modern touch – and a unique high-mounted brake light tailored for the Chinese market. Exterior color options include black, green, white, silver, and brown.
The real advancement lies within. The Qiankun ADS system powered by Huawei’s LiDAR technology enables map-free Level 2 driving assistance. This is notable because it reduces reliance on pre-mapped data, making the system more adaptable to changing road conditions.
Under the hood, the Q5L uses Audi’s EA888 Evo5 2.0TFSI engine, available in 200kW (high-power) and 150kW (lower-power) versions. It pairs with a 7-speed DCT transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system for enhanced stability. The suspension features a five-link independent setup on both axles.
Inside, the Q5L boasts a digital cockpit: an 11.9-inch instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 13.1-inch head-up display. A dedicated 10.9-inch screen faces the front passenger, enhancing the in-cabin experience. Apple CarPlay and wireless charging are standard features.
Market Position & Sales
The Audi Q5L is a major player in China’s luxury SUV market. Through November of this year, it has sold 119,600 units, outpacing the Mercedes-Benz GLC (117,200 units) and significantly exceeding the BMW X3 (69,500 units).
The integration of Huawei’s technology into a premium German vehicle highlights a growing trend: Chinese tech firms are increasingly shaping the automotive landscape. This collaboration suggests a strategic alignment between Audi and Huawei, aimed at capturing a larger share of the lucrative Chinese market.
The Q5L’s success hinges on its blend of established luxury branding with cutting-edge technology, making it a compelling option for Chinese consumers who value both prestige and innovation.
