Bentley has unveiled a rugged, off-road-ready version of its Bentayga SUV, the “X Concept,” at the FAT Ice Race in Austria. This isn’t just a cosmetic upgrade; the X Concept demonstrates Bentley’s willingness to explore a more capable version of its luxury SUV, gauging customer interest in a production model designed for real-world adventure.
From Luxury Cruiser to Trail-Ready SUV
The Bentayga has always walked a fine line between luxury and utility. While comfortable on pavement, it’s never been a true off-roader. The X Concept changes that, starting with the high-performance Bentayga Speed as its base. This means a powerful 641-horsepower twin-turbo V8 under the hood. However, the real transformation comes from modifications made to enhance its off-road prowess.
Key Upgrades: Tires, Lift, and Lighting
Bentley has equipped the X Concept with forged 22-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. The suspension has been lifted, increasing ground clearance to 12.2 inches and allowing for a wading depth of nearly two feet. Wheel arches have been widened to accommodate the larger tires, and auxiliary lighting has been added for better visibility. The track width is also 5 inches wider.
A Roof-Mounted Surprise
Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the electric go-kart strapped to the roof rack. This isn’t just for show; it’s a fully functional kart used in the FAT Karting League, designed for young racers. The addition highlights Bentley’s playful approach to the concept and adds an unexpected element of fun.
Why This Matters
The Bentayga X Concept responds to a growing demand for SUVs that can actually deliver off-road capability. Buyers aren’t just looking for vehicles that appear rugged; they want ones that can handle real adventures. Bentley is testing the waters to see if there’s enough demand to justify a production version, which could further boost sales of its already successful luxury SUV.
The X Concept isn’t just a showpiece; it’s a signal that Bentley is listening to its customers and willing to adapt its lineup to meet changing preferences.
The Bentayga X Concept represents a shift in thinking for Bentley, showing that even ultra-luxury brands recognize the appeal of a truly capable SUV. If customer feedback is strong, we may see a production version hit showrooms soon, blending Bentley’s signature luxury with genuine off-road performance.
