BMW Recalls 16,500+ Vehicles in Australia Over Fire Hazard

Munich-based automaker BMW is recalling over 16,500 vehicles sold in Australia due to a defect that could cause engine fires. The affected vehicles were manufactured between 2020 and 2023 and span nine popular model lines: 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X4, X5, and Z4.

What’s the Issue?

The recall stems from a manufacturing flaw in the starter motor solenoid switch. Over time, this switch can wear prematurely, leading to an internal short circuit. This short circuit poses two primary risks : either the engine will fail to start, or, more seriously, the overheating component could ignite a fire while the vehicle is in operation.

BMW’s official notice explicitly states that engine fires and inability to restart the engine could lead to injury or property damage.

Who Is Affected?

Owners of the affected vehicles should check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) against the list provided by BMW. The recall applies to vehicles produced within the specified 2020–2023 timeframe.

What Should Owners Do?

BMW urges owners of recalled vehicles to schedule a free repair appointment with an authorised dealership immediately. Until the fix is applied, the company strongly advises against leaving the vehicle unattended while running and explicitly recommends disabling any remote engine start functions.

Drivers have reported smelling or seeing smoke during operation. BMW’s recall hotline is available at 1800 243 675 for additional information.

Why This Matters

Vehicle recalls, while inconvenient, are critical for public safety. Engine fires can escalate rapidly, posing a direct threat to occupants and bystanders. The fact that this defect affects a broad range of BMW models suggests a systemic manufacturing issue that required a large-scale corrective action.

Failure to address these recalls promptly could result in severe consequences for both BMW and its customers.
