BYD Great Tang SUV Set to Launch in China This May With Up to 950km Range

The BYD Great Tang, a full-size SUV positioned as the brand’s new flagship model, is slated for launch in the Chinese market in May. The vehicle will be available in both Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) configurations, with the all-electric version promising a maximum range of 950 kilometers (590 miles) – making it one of the longest-range electric crossovers currently available.

Flagship Model and Key Features

The Great Tang is the production version of the Dynasty-D concept first showcased at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. It stands out with features like rear-wheel steering, air suspension, and a spacious interior equipped with three central screens, folding second-row tables, a ceiling-mounted display, and even an integrated refrigerator. These amenities cater to family drivers seeking comfort and convenience.

Pricing and Market Positioning

While initial reports suggested a price point above 400,000 yuan (approximately $58,090 USD), industry analysts, including CarNewsChina, expect BYD to price the Great Tang under 300,000 yuan (around $43,570 USD). This strategy avoids direct competition with BYD’s Denza N8L and N9 models. Instead, the Great Tang will directly challenge the Geely Galaxy M9 crossover, which sold over 11,600 units in China from January to February. The Galaxy M9’s price range is 183,800 – 248,800 yuan (roughly $26,690 – $36,130 USD).

Powertrain Options and Performance

The BYD Great Tang will offer three powertrain options:

  • BEV: The electric variant uses BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, supporting rapid megawatt charging. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version with a 300kW motor achieves a CLTC range of 950 km with a 130.15 kWh battery. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) version boasts 585 kW and accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, with an estimated range of 850 km.
  • PHEV (DM-i): This variant combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a 200 kW electric motor, offering a 342 km electric range using a 66.48 kWh battery.
  • PHEV (DM-p): Equipped with the same 1.5-liter ICE and dual e-motors delivering 400 kW, this version provides enhanced performance.

Size and Technological Features

The Great Tang is a large crossover with dimensions of 5302/1999/1800 mm and a 3,130 mm wheelbase, making it the largest BYD-branded crossover to date. It features DiSus-A air suspension with dual-chamber springs and rear-wheel steering for improved maneuverability (5.2-meter turning radius). Additional luxury features include power doors, zero-gravity seats, and a 27-speaker sound system.

The BYD Great Tang’s launch represents a strategic move by BYD to compete directly in the full-size SUV segment, offering a compelling combination of range, features, and potential value. Its success will depend on pricing and how well it appeals to families seeking spacious, technologically advanced vehicles.
