Ford Mondeo Continues in China with Major Upgrades for December Launch

The Ford Mondeo, discontinued in Europe and North America, will receive a significant update exclusively for the Chinese market. Changan Ford has confirmed the launch of the new model on December 4th, following its preview at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The revamped Mondeo boasts substantial design, interior, and tech improvements tailored for Chinese consumers.

Redesigned Exterior

The latest Mondeo adopts a sportier stance, sitting lower and wider than previous iterations. The front grille maintains familiar Ford styling cues, while a fastback roofline and blacked-out trim elements (roof, windows, mirrors) create a modern aesthetic. A key feature is the adoption of flush, hidden door handles across all versions. At the rear, the signature three-bar taillight design confirms its Ford lineage.

Revolutionary Interior Tech

Inside, the Mondeo features a striking wraparound dashboard dominated by a massive 27-inch 4K display. This is the largest screen ever fitted to a Ford vehicle. The system runs on Qualcomm’s 8155 chip and incorporates the latest SYNC+ intelligent interface, including native Gaode (Amap) navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay. A yacht-inspired floating center console and an advanced 540-degree panoramic imaging system add to the luxury feel. Ford has also implemented “STR” quick-start tech to minimize system lag.

Space and Comfort

Despite the sleek redesign, the Mondeo maintains its practical five-seat layout. Rear passenger legroom is generous, even accommodating occupants approaching six feet tall. The panoramic sunroof now covers nearly one square meter, and cabin storage has been increased to 47.5 liters. These improvements represent a clear step up from the 2025 Mondeo, which offered standard seating and smaller infotainment options.

Performance Boost

Under the hood, the updated Mondeo is powered by a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Output has been increased to 261 horsepower and 408 Nm of torque, surpassing previous China-market variants. While some earlier versions of the Mondeo offered a 1.5T hybrid, this launch focuses on the upgraded 2.0T powertrain, solidifying its position in the midsize combustion-sedan segment.

Notably, the China-built Mondeo is also sold in select international markets, including the Middle East where it’s marketed as the Ford Taurus.

The continued production of the Mondeo in China underscores Ford’s strategic commitment to the region. Despite declining sales in North America and Europe, Ford is doubling down on the Chinese market, catering to its unique preferences with updated tech and design. This suggests a long-term shift in Ford’s global production strategy.
