Hyundai has unveiled the Crater concept at the LA AutoMobility show, showcasing a rugged, electric off-roader that pushes the boundaries of its existing XRT line. The Crater isn’t just a design exercise; it signals Hyundai’s intent to inject more versatility and bold styling into its future adventure-focused models.
A New Take on Off-Road Capability
Hyundai’s XRT trim – similar to Audi’s Allroad – already equips vehicles like the Ioniq 5, Tucson, and Santa Fe for light off-road use. The Crater Concept takes this philosophy to the extreme, offering a far more aggressive, purpose-built design. While there are no current plans for production, the vehicle demonstrates Hyundai’s willingness to explore bolder designs in the competitive off-road segment dominated by Jeep, Ford, and Toyota.
The Crater stands out by being fully electric. Though Hyundai hasn’t released full specs, the concept likely shares the Ioniq 5’s 84kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. This would position it as a unique alternative in a market where most rugged vehicles still rely on gasoline engines.
Design and Features
The Crater boasts an imposing look, featuring sharp angles, short overhangs, and oversized off-road tires mounted on 18-inch wheels. Hyundai claims the wheel design was inspired by a “hexagonal asteroid impacting a sheer metal landscape,” reflecting a futuristic aesthetic.
Beyond aesthetics, the Crater includes practical off-road enhancements: skid plates, tow hooks, and “limb risers” to protect the hood from branches. The concept also introduces unconventional features such as rear-hinged back doors (eliminating the B-pillar) and digital side mirrors. Auxiliary lights on the roof display the same pixelated ghost character seen on Hyundai’s earlier “Insteroid” space-themed concept.
A Cabin Designed for Survival
The interior is equally striking, prioritizing functionality alongside style. The Crater is equipped with a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a removable Bluetooth speaker, and a full roll cage for extreme scenarios. These features emphasize Hyundai’s vision of the Crater as a vehicle built for serious adventurers.
The Hyundai Crater Concept isn’t just about looks; it’s a statement of intent. Hyundai is serious about challenging established players in the off-road market with a bold, electric alternative.
