Hyundai has revealed the Boulder concept at the 2026 New York auto show, signaling a major push into the competitive body-on-frame SUV and pickup truck market. The vehicle, clearly inspired by the Ford Bronco, previews a new platform set to underpin both an off-road SUV and a mid-size pickup by 2030.
Design and Features: A Blend of Rugged and Refined
The Boulder concept showcases Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design philosophy, combining boxy, aggressive lines with upscale touches. The design borrows heavily from popular off-roaders like the Bronco and Land Rover Defender, featuring roof-mounted safari windows, rear-hinged coach doors for easy access, and a dual-hinged tailgate.
Key details include:
- 37-inch mud-terrain tires for enhanced off-road capability.
- Aggressive approach and departure angles.
- A cabin designed for practicality, with fold-out tray tables and physical controls instead of relying on touchscreens.
Strategic Push into a Key Market Segment
Hyundai’s move comes as pickup trucks dominate the U.S. automotive landscape. In 2025, six of the 25 best-selling vehicles were pickups, including full-size models like the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado, as well as the popular mid-size Toyota Tacoma and compact Ford Maverick.
This is a critical step for Hyundai, which has struggled to gain traction in the pickup market with its compact Santa Cruz model. The Boulder’s larger size and more rugged design may allow it to compete directly with established players in the mid-size segment.
Production Plans: Built in the USA
Hyundai has confirmed that the body-on-frame platform will be developed and manufactured in the United States, specifically targeting the North American market. This decision aligns with the company’s efforts to localize production and capitalize on demand for capable off-road vehicles.
The Boulder concept is more than just a design exercise; it represents a strategic commitment to a high-demand segment where Hyundai sees significant growth potential. The arrival of a rugged SUV and a new pickup truck will test the company’s ability to compete with well-established brands, but the Boulder suggests they are ready for the challenge.
