Kia and Genesis Issue Major Recall Over Potential Fuel Leak Fire Risk

10

Kia and Genesis have announced a significant safety recall affecting approximately 235,792 vehicles. The recall addresses a mechanical flaw that could lead to fuel leaks, posing a serious fire hazard within the engine compartment.

The Core Issue: A Mechanical Weakness

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from a “production deviation” regarding the fuel system. Specifically, the retention fasteners on the crossover fuel pipe—which connects the left and right fuel lines—may loosen over time.

If these fasteners lose their grip, the connection between the fuel pipe and the fuel rail can fail. This would result in a fuel leak, significantly increasing the risk of an engine bay fire while the vehicle is in operation.

Affected Models and Scope

While the recalls were filed separately by the two brands on April 10, they appear to be linked to the same underlying component issue within the Hyundai Motor Group’s engine lineup. The defect specifically targets vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

The recall is divided between two major groups:

Kia Recall

  • Model: Kia Carnival (minivan)
  • Affected Volume: 141,032 vehicles
  • Model Years: 2022–2026
  • Note: The affected units are believed to be the non-hybrid versions utilizing the naturally aspirated 3.5L V-6.

Genesis Recall

  • Models: GV70, GV80, G80, and G90
  • Affected Volume: 94,760 vehicles
  • Model Years: 2021–2026
  • Note: These models typically utilize the twin-turbocharged version of the 3.5L V-6.

What Owners Should Do

The manufacturers are initiating a proactive inspection and repair process. Owners of the affected vehicles do not need to take immediate action, but they should watch for upcoming communications from their respective brands.

The Repair Process:
1. Inspection: Dealership technicians will inspect the high-pressure crossover pipe for any signs of leakage.
2. Remedy: If a leak is detected, the pipe or its connectors will be replaced. If no leak is found, technicians will tighten the fasteners to prevent future loosening.

Timeline for Notification:
Kia owners can expect notification letters starting June 2.
Genesis owners can expect notification letters starting June 8.

Summary: This recall addresses a specific fastener failure in the 3.5L V-6 fuel system that could lead to engine fires; owners of affected Kia and Genesis models will be contacted by dealerships for free inspections and repairs.
