Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand backed by Stellantis, has unveiled its new B03X compact SUV. This model is designed to compete directly with the Ford Puma Gen-E in the rapidly growing EV crossover market. The B03X, also known as the A10 in China, is set to arrive in the UK by late next year.
Range and Performance Expectations
Leapmotor claims the B03X will deliver a range of up to 311 miles based on China’s testing standards, which tend to be more generous than European or US measurements. The vehicle is expected to use the same 67.1kWh battery pack as the larger Leapmotor B10, which currently achieves around 270 miles of range. This puts the B03X ahead of the Puma Gen-E, which has recently been updated to offer 250 miles.
The B03X is likely to share the B10’s 215bhp rear-mounted electric motor. This configuration will provide a balance of efficiency and performance for the compact crossover segment.
Future Lineup and Platform Strategy
The B03X is the first in a series of smaller models Leapmotor plans to release. The lineup will expand to include a supermini-sized EV similar in concept to the Volkswagen ID Polo or Renault 5. These new vehicles will all be built on the company’s Leap 3.5 rear-wheel-drive platform, which is also used in the B10.
This platform allows Leapmotor to offer more advanced technology and improved interior space compared to its current T03 city car. All B03X models will be exclusively electric, with no hybrid versions planned.
Unique Design and Aerodynamics
The B03X’s name reflects its boxy, upright design. One executive at the Guangzhou motor show likened its shape to a Japanese kei car, known for its compact size and efficiency. Despite the boxy shape, Leapmotor claims the vehicle will have an efficient 0.26 drag coefficient.
Advanced Tech Features
The B03X will include advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), an AI-powered cockpit, and over-the-air software updates. The vehicle will also be equipped with lidar sensors to support level-two semi-autonomous driving capabilities, though this feature may be limited to the Chinese market initially.
The introduction of the Leapmotor B03X signals a new level of competition in the affordable EV crossover market, combining range, technology, and a distinctive design. Leapmotor’s strategy of leveraging a common platform across multiple models could also allow it to offer compelling value as it expands into new markets.
