Mercedes-Benz is preparing a high-performance AMG variant of its upcoming E-Class EQ electric sedan, aiming to address shortcomings of the existing AMG EQE model. Spy shots reveal a design shift towards a more conventional aesthetic, prioritizing both performance and broader market appeal. This move signals a correction in strategy, as the AMG EQE has underperformed in sales.
Exterior Design Overhaul
The prototype showcases a fully enclosed grille, mirroring the styling found on the C-Class and GLC EQs. This aligns with Mercedes’ current design language, offering a cleaner, more recognizable front profile. Additional features include a sporty bumper, updated headlights, and lightweight AMG wheels paired with high-performance cross-drilled brakes.
The bodywork has been streamlined, adopting a more traditional sedan silhouette. Extended fender flares suggest a wider track, hinting at improved handling characteristics. Though the test vehicle sports a makeshift rear spoiler and temporary taillights, a sportier rear diffuser is also visible.
Interior Expectations
While interior shots remain limited, the E-Class EQ is expected to follow the electric GLC’s setup. This includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment system. The optional MBUX Superscreen adds a 14-inch front passenger display, while the ultimate MBUX Hyperscreen offers a massive 39.1-inch display spanning the dashboard.
Performance and Technical Details
The E-Class EQ will utilize the MB.EA platform, sharing key components with the GLC EV. Rumors suggest the AMG variant could employ three Yasa axial flux motors, potentially delivering up to 939 hp (700 kW / 952 PS). This would significantly surpass the AMG EQE’s output of 668 hp.
The current AMG EQE boasts a 90.6 kWh battery and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds, yet suffers from a disappointing EPA-estimated range of only 220 miles. The E-Class EQ is expected to improve upon this range, addressing a critical flaw in the current model.
The redesign of the E-Class EQ indicates a strategic shift towards more mainstream appeal while retaining the high performance expected from the AMG brand. Improving range and refining the design are key priorities for Mercedes-Benz.
