MG 4 EV Urban: New Pricing Puts Pressure on BYD, GWM, and GAC

14

MG has announced aggressive pricing for its 2026 MG 4 EV Urban, starting at $31,990 drive-away. This positions the new model competitively against rivals like the GWM Ora, GAC Aion UT, and BYD Dolphin in the Australian market. The Urban is slated to arrive in dealerships starting April 1, 2026.

Price and Positioning

The MG 4 EV Urban undercuts the GWM Ora (starting at $33,990 drive-away) and matches the GAC Aion UT’s temporary promotional price of $30,990 drive-away. While the BYD Dolphin begins at $29,990 before on-road costs, the Urban aims to deliver a compelling value proposition for buyers. The new model will be sold alongside the existing MG 4, which starts at $37,990 before on-road costs for the base Excite variant.

Technical Specifications

The Urban will be exclusively available in front-wheel drive, offering two battery size options: a standard 43kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack and a larger 54kWh LFP version (Long Range). Despite expectations, the much-hyped semi-solid-state battery technology – which has been announced for overseas markets – is not yet confirmed for Australian models.

Chinese-market figures suggest ranges up to 437km for the smaller battery and 530km for the Long Range version, though these numbers are based on the more lenient CLTC testing cycle. Power outputs are expected to be between 110kW and 118kW with 250Nm of torque, delivering a 0–100km/h time as low as 9.5 seconds.

Dimensions and Features

The MG 4 EV Urban measures 4395mm long, 1842mm wide, and 1551mm tall, with a 2750mm wheelbase. This makes it slightly larger than the current MG 4 model, offering increased space. However, the Urban utilizes a simpler torsion-beam rear suspension setup instead of the more sophisticated multi-link independent suspension found in the standard MG 4.

Boot capacity ranges from 568 to 577 liters (up to the roof), expanding to 1364 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Future Plans

MG is also developing the MG 2 EV, which is intended to compete directly with the BYD Atto 1—currently the most affordable EV in Australia, priced from $24,990 before on-road costs.

The MG 4 EV Urban’s pricing strategy signals a broader trend: automakers are aggressively competing in the EV space, particularly in the budget segment. This competition benefits consumers by driving down prices and accelerating EV adoption.
