MG S6 EV Review: A Surprisingly Capable Electric SUV

The MG S6 EV enters a competitive market with a clear value proposition: delivering a compelling electric SUV experience at a lower price point than many rivals. While its exterior styling leans towards anonymity – resembling the S5 EV with a nod to the Cyberster’s rear light bar – the S6 distinguishes itself through a well-rounded driving experience and practical features.

Powertrain and Performance

The S6 EV is offered in three configurations, all powered by a 77 kWh battery. Rear-wheel drive models (SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range) produce 241 bhp and 258 lb-ft of torque, achieving a WLTP range of up to 329 miles. The dual-motor, all-wheel drive variant delivers 357 bhp and 398 lb-ft, accelerating from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds with a 301-mile WLTP range.

The dual-motor model stands out for its sleeper-like performance, offering impressive mid-range punch. While initial acceleration can be cautious due to traction control, it delivers a wave of steady power at highway speeds. The single-motor rear-wheel drive version is over two seconds slower to 62 mph, but remains adequately fast for most drivers.

Interior and Technology

The S6 EV’s cabin prioritizes usability over luxury. Physical controls for heating, fan, and volume are a welcome inclusion, unlike many modern EVs. A 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen dominates the dashboard, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Trophy models add a head-up display.

While the interior avoids overtly cheap materials, cost-cutting is evident in details like mismatched fonts between the screen and physical buttons. The head-up display appears low-resolution, and seat materials are not premium leather or suede.

Boot capacity is generous at 674 liters with the rear seats up and 1910 liters folded down, complemented by a 124-liter frunk.

Driving Dynamics

The MG S6 EV stands out for its surprisingly engaging driving experience. Steering is communicative for an SUV of this type, with drive modes nicely tuned to provide varying levels of feedback. The rear-wheel drive configuration adds to efficiency and drivability.

The all-wheel drive variant weighs approximately 100 kg more, which is noticeable in less sharp turn-in and a slightly heavier feel on undulating roads.

Brakes are natural and consistent, with adjustable regenerative braking levels.

Practicality and Value

The MG S6 EV excels in quantifiable terms: range, price, and size. It delivers a competitive electric SUV experience at a lower cost than many rivals. The surprising level of driving delight – good steering, minimal fuss on the road, quick acceleration, and adjustable nannying systems – further enhances its appeal.

The MG S6 EV offers a compelling blend of practicality, performance, and value, positioning it as a strong contender in the electric SUV market. It delivers an experience that could easily be mistaken for a product from a more established European firm
