Mitsubishi Returns to UK Market with New L200 Pickup

3

Mitsubishi is re-entering the UK automotive market in May with its redesigned L200 pickup truck, aiming to compete directly with popular models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

Pricing and Positioning

The new L200 will start at £36,295 (excluding VAT), slotting it between the more affordable Ford Ranger (£30,800 ex-VAT) and the higher-priced Toyota Hilux (£40,436 ex-VAT). A Commercial variant, priced at £37,495 ex-VAT, will prioritize cargo space by removing the rear seats for a more secure, dedicated load area.

Standard Configuration and Powertrain

All UK-spec L200 models will come in a double-cab configuration, aligning with customer preferences in this segment. Every version will be powered by a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. While detailed specifications are pending, the engine is expected to deliver around 201bhp and 347lb ft of torque, as seen in other markets.

Performance Capabilities

The L200 is engineered for utility, offering a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and a one-tonne payload. Two trim levels will be available: Titan and Barbarian, with the latter priced at £39,995 ex-VAT. The Barbarian trim includes permanent all-wheel drive engagement and selectable terrain modes for enhanced off-road performance.

Return to UK Market

The L200’s return marks Mitsubishi’s comeback to the UK after a withdrawal in 2021. The model, alongside the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV, played a significant role in the brand’s previous success in the region. Mitsubishi plans to expand its UK line-up beyond these two models, with potential future imports including the Eclipse Cross crossover, a rebadged Renault Scenic. The company’s European head, Frank Krol, indicated in 2022 that Mitsubishi will need “more than one” electric vehicle to ensure success in the UK market.

Mitsubishi’s reentry is a calculated move to regain market share in the competitive UK pickup segment. The L200’s positioning and features suggest a direct challenge to established rivals, while the planned expansion of the electric vehicle lineup demonstrates a commitment to long-term sustainability.
