Nissan NX8: First Foreign SUV with 800V Fast Charging

Nissan’s NX8, soon to launch under the Dongfeng Nissan banner, represents a significant step forward in electric vehicle (EV) technology for international brands in China. The new SUV is notable for being the first overseas-branded NEV SUV to integrate an 800V high-voltage platform with CATL’s ultra-fast 5C charging capability. This means dramatically shorter charging times, a feature typically found only in premium EV models.

Powertrain Options: EREV and Pure Electric

The NX8 will be available in two versions: a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV) and a pure EV. The range-extender model combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine (109 kW) with a 195 kW electric motor. This setup offers real-world flexibility for drivers who want EV performance without range anxiety.

  • EREV Range: 102 km or 185 km of pure electric range, depending on the battery pack size (20.3 kWh, 21.1 kWh, or 37.4 kWh).
  • Pure EV: The fully electric variant details haven’t been released yet, but it will also use the 800V architecture for fast charging.

Design and Technology

The NX8 builds on Nissan’s V-motion design, now bolder with a striking 2.4-meter “star ring” light bar across the front. The vehicle also features:
– Concealed door handles for a sleeker profile.
– A full-width quantum OLED taillight with customizable lighting patterns.
– Wheel options of 19 or 20 inches.

The NX8 is equipped with integrated lidar, enabling advanced driver-assistance features such as high-speed and urban navigation assistance, as well as intelligent parking across various scenarios.

Dimensions and Weight

The SUV is a mid-size vehicle with these key specs:
Length: 4870 mm
Width: 1920 mm
Height: 1680 mm
Wheelbase: 2917 mm
Weight: 2196–2245 kg (curb weight)

The NX8’s integration of 800V charging and advanced driver-assistance systems marks a turning point for foreign EV brands competing in the Chinese market. This move positions Nissan as an early adopter of high-speed charging capabilities, catering to the growing demand for convenience and performance.
