Skoda has unveiled a striking electric concept based on its classic 1969-1977 100 sedan, blending retro aesthetics with a forward-looking rear-wheel-drive EV powertrain. This project is part of Skoda’s “Icons Get a Makeover” series, which reimagines beloved historical models for the modern era.
A Nod to the Past, a Leap into the Future
The original Skoda 100 sold over one million units, establishing itself as a staple in Eastern European motoring. The concept retains the sharp, angular lines of the original while introducing futuristic design elements, such as a sleek, minimalist front end with a distinctive four-headlight signature.
Skoda exterior designer Martin Paclt emphasized the goal wasn’t simple nostalgia. “I didn’t want to do a retro-styled recreation,” he explained, aiming instead for a contemporary interpretation that honors the spirit of the original.
Design Details: Cooling and Proportions
The most striking feature is the rear design. Paying homage to the original 100’s rear-engine layout, the concept incorporates a roof-mounted intake and side air vents. These elements aren’t just cosmetic; they mimic the cooling needs of the classic car’s 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine, despite the modern concept being fully electric.
Paclt drew proportions from Skoda’s current Superb model, resulting in a slightly larger vehicle. The design balances homage with practicality, suggesting that elements of this concept could influence future Skoda production models.
