2026 Subaru Outback: Rugged Updates and New Wilderness Lineup

3

The Subaru Outback is entering its seventh generation with a 2026 refresh set to arrive in Australia. The update brings bolder styling, slight price increases, and the introduction of the new Wilderness sub-brand – designed to compete with off-road focused variants from other manufacturers.

The base Outback model will start at $48,990, up $4,800 from the previous generation. The new Wilderness trim will launch at $59,690, effectively replacing the XT variants in the outgoing range. Subaru positions the Wilderness as a step up from standard trims, much like how STI enhances performance in other models.

Engine Options and Performance

The 2026 Outback maintains the same two boxer engines: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder (137kW/245Nm) and a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (194kW/382Nm). The turbo engine, now exclusive to the Wilderness trim, offers 11kW more power and 32Nm more torque than the outgoing Outback XT, nearly matching the WRX in output. Notably, the towing capacity has been reduced by 300kg.

The Wilderness also receives adaptive suspension for the first time, mirroring the setup found in the WRX tS. All Outback models remain all-wheel-drive with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) including an eight-speed manual mode. Subaru has also implemented its dual-pinion steering system – previously seen in the WRX and Forester – to improve steering response.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the 2026 Outback features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard across all trims. The previous generation’s vertical 11.6-inch infotainment screen has been replaced with a more conventional 12.1-inch horizontal unit. Wireless smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard, alongside physical climate control buttons and knobs.

Dimensions and Space

The new Outback is larger in all dimensions, increasing cargo space by roughly 10 liters with the rear seats up, and 30 liters with them folded down. Boot capacity ranges from 1,810 to 1,844 liters depending on the trim.

Safety Features

The 2026 Outback includes nine airbags, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite. New additions include a far-side airbag, driver monitoring system, and front-side radar. Higher trims add features like a surround-view camera and active lane-change assist. The vehicle has yet to be crash-tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP.

Servicing and Warranty

Subaru Australia offers a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty. Capped-price servicing is available, with slightly longer intervals for the Wilderness model. Servicing costs are as follows:

  • First Service: $386
  • Second Service: $480
  • Third Service: $386
  • Fourth Service: $774
  • Fifth Service: $386

The 2026 Subaru Outback represents a significant step forward in both styling and capability. The introduction of the Wilderness trim caters to a growing demand for more rugged SUVs, while maintaining Subaru’s commitment to safety and reliability.
