Toyota is developing a high-performance, twin-turbocharged V-12 hybrid powertrain for its upcoming Century Coupe, according to recent reports. This engine is expected to deliver up to 800 horsepower, positioning the Century Coupe as a direct competitor to luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
Century’s Evolution: From Sedan to Standalone Brand
The Century nameplate has historically represented Toyota’s most luxurious offerings since 1967, initially as a high-end sedan. Now, Toyota is transitioning Century into an independent brand, starting with the Century Coupe concept unveiled last year.
The Century Coupe is a two-door, high-riding vehicle designed to be a statement piece for the new brand. This move signals Toyota’s intent to compete globally in the ultra-luxury market, a segment dominated by European automakers.
Powertrain Details: V-12 Hybrid with Twin Turbos
The potential powertrain combines a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine with electric motors. This setup builds on Century’s previous use of V-12 engines (the second generation, 1997-2017), though the newest iteration would represent a significant upgrade in performance.
The engine is still under development, with an expected debut no earlier than 2027. It will likely be paired with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive to maximize power delivery.
Global Expansion and U.S. Availability
Toyota has not historically sold Century-badged vehicles in the U.S. However, the company’s stated goal of competing with Rolls-Royce and Bentley suggests a potential shift in strategy.
If the Century Coupe makes it to the U.S., it will likely be sold through select Lexus dealerships, as Toyota intends to expand the brand globally. The decision hinges on market demand and the feasibility of meeting luxury vehicle regulations in North America.
The Century Coupe’s development reflects Toyota’s ambition to establish itself as a serious player in the high-end automotive segment, challenging established European brands with its own blend of luxury and performance.
