Vietnamese automaker VinFast is aggressively expanding into the high-end automotive sector with the launch of its new luxury sub-brand, Lac Hong. This move represents a significant escalation in VinFast’s ambitions, signaling a direct challenge to established luxury carmakers.
Lac Hong: A Brand Rooted in Vietnamese Heritage
The Lac Hong name first appeared on exclusive armored and presidential versions of the VF9 SUV, but will become a fully independent brand by 2027. The initial lineup includes two models: the flagship 900S sedan and the 800S SUV. Both vehicles heavily emphasize Vietnamese cultural motifs, featuring distinctive vertical-slat grilles inspired by bamboo, gold-plated badging, and interior elements mirroring bronze drums and terraced rice fields.
This branding strategy is deliberate. VinFast isn’t simply building luxury cars; it’s crafting an identity deeply tied to national pride. This approach could resonate strongly in Vietnam and potentially appeal to consumers seeking unique luxury experiences.
Ultra-Luxury Features and Performance Specs
The 900S, in particular, aims for the highest tier of opulence. It will offer features like a glass partition separating front and rear passengers, a starlight headliner, folding tables, and an integrated screen projector. The interiors will be lavishly appointed with Nappa leather, gold trim, and extensive wood accents.
Both models will be available with a high-performance tri-motor drivetrain producing 460kW (approximately 612 horsepower). However, VinFast has not yet revealed battery capacity or range estimates, a critical detail for potential buyers in the electric vehicle market. The cars will also feature an active air suspension system designed for maximum comfort.
VinFast’s Rapid Rise and Controversial History
VinFast was founded in 2017 by Phạm Nhật Vượng, one of Vietnam’s wealthiest individuals. The company initially relied on rebadged or heavily modified existing models, including the Opel Karl (as the Fadil) and BMW 5/X5 series (as the Lux A2.0 and SA2.0).
Over the past several years, VinFast has rapidly expanded its lineup to include seven EVs, six e-scooters, and two electric buses. Despite facing harsh criticism from some automotive reviewers — with publications like Motor Trend deeming early models “not ready for public consumption” — VinFast has become Vietnam’s top-selling automaker. Sales nearly doubled in 2024, reaching 175,099 vehicles.
This success, combined with the launch of Lac Hong, demonstrates VinFast’s aggressive growth strategy. The company is clearly willing to take risks and invest heavily in its automotive ambitions.
The Lac Hong 800S and 900S are initially slated for release in Vietnam in 2027. Pricing and international export plans remain unconfirmed.
VinFast’s entry into the luxury market with Lac Hong is a bold move that could reshape the Vietnamese automotive landscape and potentially challenge established global brands. Whether the brand can deliver on its promises of luxury and performance remains to be seen.
