XPeng G6 to Challenge Tesla with Sub-£40k Pricing in the UK

11

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng will launch its G6 mid-size SUV in the United Kingdom in early 2026, aiming to undercut key competitors like the Tesla Model Y. The G6 will be available in three trims: a rear-wheel-drive Standard Range model starting at £39,990, a Long Range version at £44,990, and a high-performance dual-motor AWD Black Edition priced at £49,990.

Targeting the Competitive EV Market

XPeng’s entry into the UK market comes as EV adoption accelerates, but competition intensifies. The G6 is positioned to directly challenge the Tesla Model Y, as well as established rivals such as the Ford Explorer and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Current discounts on the Ioniq 5 and Explorer (around £6,000 and £8,000 respectively) mean XPeng and Tesla will compete at list prices initially.

A Rapidly Growing Automaker

Founded just ten years ago, XPeng has already launched six models in Europe. The company’s rapid growth has attracted significant investment, including a recent $700 million (£540 million) stake from the Volkswagen Group. The two firms are collaborating on the development of two new electric vehicles for the Chinese market, set to launch in 2026. This partnership highlights XPeng’s credibility and potential within the global EV landscape.

UK Distribution and Service Network

International Motors (IM) will handle distribution for XPeng in the UK, establishing a sales and after-sales network. The exact structure of this network remains unclear, with XPeng potentially utilizing standalone dealerships or integrating with existing IM locations.

Performance and Range Variations

XPeng has refined the G6’s powertrain since initial testing in 2025. The Standard Range RWD model now delivers 292bhp (up from 270bhp) thanks to a slightly larger 68kWh battery, extending its range to 292 miles. Conversely, the Long Range RWD variant has seen its battery capacity reduced from 88kWh to 80kWh, dropping range from 354 miles to 326 miles.

The high-performance AWD version combines dual electric motors with the 80kWh battery, producing 486bhp and 660Nm of torque. This configuration achieves a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds, with a range of 317 miles. Charging speeds are competitive, with the larger battery capable of reaching 10-80% in approximately 12 minutes using a peak charge rate of 451kW.

Interior and Exterior Enhancements

XPeng has updated the G6’s interior with wood-grain trim, suede-effect ceiling lining, upgraded wireless charging pads (50W), and ambient lighting on higher trims. The exterior receives minor styling tweaks, including a relocated XPeng logo, body-colored wheel arches, and a new rear spoiler. The Performance model adds unique 20-inch wheels, black trim, and grey suede upholstery.

Conclusion

The XPeng G6’s aggressive pricing and feature set position it as a serious contender in the UK EV market. By directly challenging Tesla and other established brands, XPeng is betting that value and performance will resonate with cost-conscious buyers. The company’s rapid development, backed by Volkswagen’s investment, signals a long-term commitment to expanding its global presence.
