Zeekr 9X: A New Challenger to Luxury SUV Dominance

3

Zeekr, the ambitious Chinese luxury brand backed by Geely Auto, is preparing to disrupt the high-end SUV market with its flagship model, the 9X. This six-figure vehicle aims directly at established players like BMW and Audi, bringing a blend of immense power, spaciousness, and high-end features that could unsettle competitors when it arrives in Europe, including the UK in 2026.

Geely’s Ambitions and the Rise of Zeekr

Zeekr benefits from the deep pockets and automotive expertise of Geely, which also owns Volvo, Polestar, and a majority stake in Lotus. The company has been steadily expanding its European presence, having already launched the 001, X, and 7X models. The 9X represents the culmination of this expansion, pushing further into the luxury segment where margins are higher and brand recognition is crucial. The powertrain technology developed for the 9X will also trickle down to other Geely-owned brands, including Lotus’s Eletre SUV.

First Impressions: Size, Style, and Opulence

The 9X is a massive vehicle, comparable in size to a long-wheelbase Range Rover. Its exterior design makes a statement with a bold grille, 22-inch wheels, and unique lighting details including “diamond dust”-like inlays. Entry and exit are facilitated by automatically extending running boards, underscoring the vehicle’s luxurious intent. Inside, the 9X offers a premium experience with extensive use of leather, wood trim, and high-end materials. While the white leather interior is visually striking, it raises practical concerns about soiling and wear.

Space and Comfort: A Six-Seat Focus

The 9X prioritizes passenger space with a strict 2+2+2 seating layout. Legroom is generous in all rows, and the reclining second-row seats include footrests and massage functions for long-distance comfort. Despite accommodating three rows, the trunk still offers a usable 470 liters of storage, expandable to 2,148 liters with the third row folded. The tailgate features a split-opening function, creating a convenient outdoor seating area. A 220-volt socket in the luggage compartment adds further utility.

Performance and Technology: Power Without Compromise

The 9X doesn’t compromise on performance, boasting a combined output of 1,381 horsepower from its four-cylinder petrol engine and three electric motors. This results in sports-car-level acceleration (0-62 mph in 3.1 seconds) and impressive straight-line stability. Despite its size, the 9X features a surprisingly tight turning radius thanks to rear-wheel steering, though maneuvering in tight spaces remains challenging.

The powertrain includes a 70kWh battery, providing an electric range of 220 miles (CLTC testing) and supporting ultra-fast charging at up to 600kW. This allows for a 20-80% recharge in just nine minutes using a new ‘6C’ charging standard.

Pricing and Market Position

The 9X is expected to launch in the UK around 2026, with an estimated price tag of £100,000 in the top Obsidian trim. This positions it directly against established luxury SUVs like the Range Rover, challenging the status quo with a combination of cutting-edge technology, spaciousness, and aggressive performance.

Zeekr’s entry into the luxury SUV market is not just about another competitor; it represents a shift in the automotive landscape, as Chinese brands increasingly challenge the dominance of European and American automakers. The 9X is a clear signal of this intent.
