Buying a car is usually a numbers game. You obsess over zero-to-sixty times. You check the cubic footage of the cargo area. You stare at the horsepower and torque curves. Price, of course, always wins the day. But there is one number that gets ignored, even by gearheads who know their cam profiles from their crankshafts. It’s the gross axle weight rating. Or GAWR.
It sounds boring. It isn’t. It’s the difference between a smooth commute and a blown tire on the interstate.
What Is GAWR and Why Should You Care?
Here is the definition, stripped of corporate fluff. The gross axle weight rating is the maximum weight the manufacturer says an individual axle can carry. Front axle. Rear axle. They have separate limits.
Think of it as a hard cap. A wall. You do not push against it. You stay away from it.
The GAWR includes everything. The vehicle itself. The passengers. The cargo. The tongue weight of a trailer, if you are dragging one behind. All that mass has to be distributed between two axles.
Don’t confuse GAWR with gross axle weight (GAW). That is a common mistake. GAW is what the axle is actually carrying right now. It changes every second. Put a bag of cement in the bed, GAW goes up. Take it out, GAW drops. The GAWR? That never changes. It is stamped in stone by the engineers.
Let’s say you have a pickup truck. You load four 100-pound boulders into the bed. That is 400 pounds. Your rear GAW increases by 400 pounds. Your GAWR stays exactly where it was. You unload the rocks. GAW drops. GAWR remains constant.

Which Cars Have the Highest GAWR?
From this specific dataset, the Toyota Land Cruiser (4220 lbs rear) and the Saturn Outlook (3527 lbs rear) lead the pack. The Suzuki XL7 (2921 lbs rear) is also high. These are SUVs and crossovers. Sedans rarely exceed 2500 lbs per axle. The Volvo XC90 (3150 lbs rear) fits the pattern. Heavy vehicles, heavy axles.
The 2007 Toyota RAV4 outlier (4730 lbs rear) is suspicious. It’s likely an error in the source data or a specific trim level with heavy-duty suspension. Verify before trusting it.

If you’re building a track car, GAWR matters less than weight distribution. If you’re towing, it matters a lot. The rear axle usually takes the hit from tongue weight. - Volvo Towing Capacity – How much trailer tongue weight the chassis can handle.
