If you are in a mountainous region, look for a runaway truck ramp. These are gravel-filled escape routes designed specifically for heavy vehicles that have lost braking capacity. They are your best bet for survival.

Pre-Trip Safety Checks Are Non-Negotiable

Most towing failures start on the driveway. Before you drive a single mile, verify the hardware.

Check these specific points:

  • Safety chains: They must be crossed and attached. If the hitch breaks, the chains should catch the trailer tongue.
  • Hitch pin: The pin holding the ball mount to the receiver must be intact. A missing pin means no tow.
  • Electrical plug: The connector must be working. Brake lights and turn signals are legally required and safety-critical.
  • Coupling device: The latch on the hitch ball must be secure. A loose coupling separates the vehicle from the load.
