In an era where most automotive manufacturers are aggressively downsizing engines or transitioning entirely to electric powertrains, Great Wall Motors (GWM) is taking a different path. At the Beijing Auto Show, the automaker confirmed that its flagship SUV, the Tank 700, will be equipped with a newly developed V8 engine—a move that runs counter to the prevailing industry trend of “right-sizing” for efficiency.

A Strategy Built for Global Markets, Not China

The decision to develop a V8 is a calculated move aimed at specific international demographics rather than the domestic Chinese market. GWM Chairman Jack Wei explicitly stated that this engine does not align with current consumer preferences in China, where small-displacement engines and electrified vehicles are the dominant force.

Instead, GWM is targeting markets like Australia and New Zealand. In these regions, vehicle utility is often defined by:
Heavy-duty towing capabilities
Long-distance touring and reliability
A cultural preference for large-displacement, “burly” engines

By focusing on these regions, GWM is positioning the Tank 700 to compete in territories where the emotional and practical appeal of a V8 remains a significant selling point.

Distinguishing Power: Mainstream vs. Performance

GWM is carefully segmenting its high-performance offerings to avoid brand confusion. Chairman Wei clarified that the V8 intended for the Tank 700 is a “mainstream” application, distinct from the high-performance powerhouse planned for the upcoming GWM GFsupercar (expected in 2027).

While the GFsupercar will utilize a specialized 4.0-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8, the Tank 700’s V8 is designed to be a robust, usable engine for daily utility and off-road adventures. However, “mainstream” is a relative term in this context; given that current Tank 700 variants already offer turbocharged V6s and plug-in hybrids producing upwards of 860 hp, the new V8 is likely to deliver substantial power.

Positioning the Tank 700

The Tank 700 serves as the crown jewel of the Tank lineup, blending rugged off-road hardware with premium luxury features. This places GWM in direct competition with established heavyweights in the luxury off-road segment, including:

By introducing a V8, GWM is signaling its intent to challenge these icons by offering high-displacement power alongside a potentially more aggressive pricing strategy.
