Some of the car’s specifications are obvious. You know what MPG means. You get horsepower and torque. Zero to 60 is important in a sports car. When traveling with children, the volume of the interior is important. These numbers tell you what to buy. They define value.
But other numbers confuse buyers. Ignorance here is more than a detriment. This is dangerous. Get the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR). If you are towing a trailer, you need to know this number. It is really necessary.
What is GCWR?
GCWR is the limit set by the manufacturer. This determines the combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and the loaded trailer attached to it. Never exceed this amount.
This is similar to the Gross Weight Rating (GVWR). However, there are important differences. GVWR only applies to trucks or cars. GCWR works in combination. The tow vehicle and the trailer are counted as one vehicle.
Ford makes math easy to understand. To find more GCWR calculation:
– Curb weight
– Allowable payload
– Weight of driver and passenger
– Trailer weight
This is not a true measurement of current load. This is a hard cap. Safety threshold.
Why are there restrictions?
Safety. This is the only reason.
Overloading one vehicle is dangerous. Overloading the combination is destructive. Physics doesn’t care about your intentions.
The brakes overheat. They fade. They fail. You can’t stop.
Tires blow out. They can’t handle stress.
The engine and transmission overheated. Mechanical failure follows.
Suspension components bend or break. You lose control.
The list of failures is long. The results are often the same. You don’t surpass the GCWR. Period.
Where can I find GCWR?
You need this number before connecting. Where is it?
Look for the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door frame. close to the latch.
Check the manufacturer’s website online. They published the information.
Don’t guess. Verify.
Acura GCWR data
Acura towing limits vary by model and year. Don’t assume that all MDXs can handle the same load in all configurations.

Audi GCWR data
Audi information is sparse in this data set. Many models do not have a rating. This usually means that it has not been evaluated in a particular configuration or year, or that the data was not collected here.
2006 Audi GCWR
– All models listed: no data available
2007 Audi GCWR
– Q7: £10,665.
– All other models: No information
2008 Audi GCWR
– Q7: £10,665.
– All other models: No information
2009 Audi GCWR
– Q7: £10,665.
– All other models: No information
Over the years, the Q7’s weight has remained stable at over 10,600 lbs. A4 and A6? there is nothing. When you’re towing on the A4, you might be going against the grain. or data is lost.
The big picture
You can find GCWR information on almost any brand. Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MINI, Porsche, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Smart, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.
But numbers don’t change physics. If you ignore the limitations, gravity will always win.
Most manufacturers publish this information online. Use them. Don’t eyeball it. Don’t guess. The weight of your gear is important. The weight of the passenger is important. The weight of the trailer is important.
It all adds up. Compare this with GCWR. If the total is high, you’re playing Russian roulette with the transmission and brakes.
The chart above just scratches the surface. Available only on Acura and Audi. The rest of the list is endless. Risks are common.
you know the basics. You know how to tow. But do you know the weight? Do you really know? Or do you want to hoping the brakes hold?
BMW GCWR
If you’re hauling anything heavier than your BMW for a weekend trip, the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is a hard limit. That’s not all the car can pull. This includes the weight of the vehicle itself and the weight of the trailer and its load. Getting this number wrong is like playing with fire. And insurance.
In the mid-2000s, BMW mainly operated in the sedan and coupe segments. The 3-series, 5-series and 7-series product lines come up often, but the gaps in the information are clear. There is no GCWR data for 325, 330, 335 or 525 for 2006 and 2007. This is a frustrating blind spot for anyone looking to tow a naturally aspirated inline-six. M3 and M5? Also, keep quiet about the specs. You might think that more powerful engines would have better numbers, but apparently that’s not the case.
There are a lot of SUVs out there. The X3 and X5 carry the load here.
“Until the X7 came along, the X5 was BMW’s true flagship product.”
The 2006 X5 weighed in at 10,802 lbs. By 2007 it had risen slightly to 11,132 lbs. The X3 is lighter, hovering around 7,673 lbs in 2006 and 7,662 lbs in 2007 and 2008. The X6 joined in 2008 and comes in at 11,044 lbs.
Z4? there is nothing. There is no clue about the normal Roadster or Z4M tow rating. If you had to tow a jet ski with your Z4M in 2006, on paper you would have been out of luck.
Buick GCWR
In the mid-2000s, Buick didn’t mess around with towing. They keep it simple. The LaCrosse and Lucerne sedans are lightweight players at best, with combined weight 5,000 pounds.
But look at the Rainier. Now it’s the forgotten Chevrolet Trailblazer twin. In 2006 and 2007, the Rainier GCWR was 10,500 lbs. This was serious for a mid-size crossover at the time. The Terraza? Even heavier. It weighed 8,500 pounds in 2006 but has since disappeared.
When the Enclave was introduced in 2008, it had a load rating of 9,500 lbs. The Lucerne remained steady at 4,914 lbs. The La Crosse wasn’t far behind at 4,645 pounds.
The Rendezvous is one and done when it comes to these spec numbers, weighing in at 7,746 pounds in 2006 and 2007. That wasn’t the case in 2008 or 2009. Buick streamlined its lineup, allowing older models to fade into the spec void.
Cadillac GCWR
Cadillac knows how to build heavy haulers. The Escalade family rules the charts.
The standard 2006 Escalade has a cleared 12,902 lbs. The long wheelbase ESV bumped that to 14,000 lbs. The EXT and its pickup bed weigh 13,464 lbs. By 2007, all products in the Escalade line had stabilized at 14,000 lbs. This stability means a strong frame and a cooling system designed specifically for large trailers.
The 2009 Hybrid Escalade has a low GCWR of 6,314 lbs. Don’t let the efficiency fool you. Electric assist can improve torque, but battery weight and thermal management limitations can limit towing capacity.
In sedans and crossovers, the figures are tighter. The CTS started at 4,659 lbs in 2006/2007 and rose to 5,011 lbs in 2008 and 2009. The CTS-V never moved past 5,000lbs. The DTS is a luxury cruiser weighing in at 5,159 lbs for all four years.
STS and STS-V are slightly higher. The STS-V peaked at 5,544 lbs in 2008 and 2009. The SRX crossover continued to improve over time, going from 5,314 lbs in 2006 to 6,314 lbs in 2007 and 2008, dropping 12 lbs in 2009 and 12 lbs. down? Maybe a lineup change or a more conservative evaluation of certain engine options.
XLR and XLR-V are still mystery boxes. No data available.
Chevrolet GCWR
Chevrolet has the widest net. We have a wide range of products from small sedans to large trucks.
Small cars are a weakness. From 2006 to 2009, cobalt remained stable at 4,141 lbs. Aveo has no rating. Corvette? Silence. You don’t tow a trailer behind your Corvette these days.
The situation is different for mid-size trucks. The Colorado started at 5,218 pounds in 2006, went up to 5,772 pounds in 2007, and reached 7,000 pounds in 2008 and 2009. A significant upgrade in capability.
The Silverado family is the backbone. The 1500 varied wildly. In 2006 the HD version cost £13,793. As of 2007, the Classic 1500 was at 10,798 lbs and the HD Classic was at 14,000 lbs. In 2008 and 2009 the standard 1500 cost £10,000 and the 2500 HD and 3500 HD maxed out at £16,000.
The Suburban and Tahoe have similar trends. The 2500 series is a heavy lifter. In 2006 it weighed 13,822 lbs, went up to 14,000 lbs in 2007 and reached 16,000 lbs in 2008 and 2009. The 2008 and 2009 Tahoe Hybrid weighs in at 0.00 12. SUV.
The Express vans is stable. 9,500 lbs in 2006–2008. For 2009, the 1500 jumps to 12,000 lbs, the 2500 to 11,788 lbs, and the 3500 to 12,000 lbs.
Avalanche 1500 fluctuated. It dropped from 13,000 lbs in 2007-2008 to 11,000 lbs in 2009. The 2006 Avalanche 2500 weighed 16,878 lbs, but this figure was not shown in later years. That means it was probably likely remained high or was phased out in favor of the new Silverado platform.
Chrysler GCWR
Chrysler’s lineup may be small, but some heavyweights stand out.
The 300 series is consistent. The Base 300 weighs up to 4,862 lbs over the years. The Hemi-powered 300C reached 6,216 pounds in 2006, but dropped slightly from 2007 to 2009 to 6,196 pounds.
The PT Cruiser is a surprising tow-hauler. In 2006, 8,132 lbs cleared. It dropped to 4,297 lbs in 2007, rose to 7,105 lbs in 2008, and leveled off at 4,297 lbs in 2009. This fluctuated shows that different engines or suspension packages have a significant impact on ratings.
Town & Country minivans cost £6,600 in 2006-07 and rose to £7,000 in 2008-09. Even if the wins are small, they can mean a lot to a family trailer.
The Aspen SUV is a heavy weapon. Started at £11,000 in 2007, went up to £13,966 in 2008 and then went down
Let’s cut the fluff. Wondering how much shit you can tow? The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is a hard limit. This is the maximum weight of the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer. No payload. It’s not about the weight of the language. The whole Charbon. If you exceed this number, you are playing with fire and voiding your warranty.
This is raw data from 2006-2009 models. Don’t guess. Check the specifications.
FORD GCWR
Ford trucks are the workhorses. However, they also have their limits. Get to know the F series. The 2007 F-250 and F-350 jump to 17,000 lbs. It has a lot of muscle. The E-350 Super Duty holds steady at 13,000 pounds. car? It is very light. The 2006 Focus weighs 3,771 lbs. Don’t try towing your boat with a Crown Victoria unless you want to melt the transmission.

GMC GCWR
GMC and Chevrolet share bones. The Sierra 2500/3500 and Yukon lines are where the power is. Sierra 3500 in 2008 hit 16,000 lbs in 2008. Savana vans? Solid. 12,000 lbs across the board for 2500 and 3500 models. Yukon dropped to 11,000 in 2009. Something happened there. Check your emissions package.

Kia GCWR
From 2006 to 2009, Kia Motors’ product range was small. If you want to tow something important, there aren’t that many options. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Optima’s GCWR was stable at 5,292 pounds. Ignoring the weight of the car itself, this is hardly enough for a small trailer. For 2007, the Sorento jumped in with a 9,299-pound rating. This situation continued until 2008. Rondo was never eligible to be listed on the GCWR list. The 2007 and 2008 Sportage capped out at 4,880 pounds. There is no information on older models such as Amanti, Rio and Spectra.
In 2009, the Borrego entered with a 9,398-pound GCWR. Sorrento was completely removed from the dataset that year. The Spectra model is left blank.
Land Rover GCWR
Land Rover doesn’t mess with big trucks. If you’re buying a Range Rover or LR3, chances are you’ll be hauling a boat or a large trailer. In 2006-2007, the Range Rover weighed 13,324 pounds. Range Rover Sport edged up slightly to 13,334 pounds and remained the same in 2009. By 2009 the LR3 climbed from 13,165 to 13,662 pounds. The LR2 was introduced in 2006 without a number, then in 2009 at 7,905 pounds. The 2008 LR3 and Range Rover are no longer listed.
Lexus GCWR
Lexus has a strange division. Luxury sedans like the ES and GS are not GCWR rated. They are for driving. However, the GX 470 held steady at 11,521 pounds in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The LX 470 and later the LX 570 were powerful. The LX 470 weighs 12,240 lbs. The LX 570 replaced it in 2008 with a massive 14,645-pound GCWR. The RX 350 weighs around 6,000 to 7,500 pounds, depending on model year and hybrid and non-hybrid configurations. Prices for the RX 400h started at £8,015 and dropped to £6,340 in 2008, where they have remained ever since. The 2006 LS 430 weighs just 6,140 lbs.
Lincoln GCWR
Lincoln enters the truck market. The Mark LT was the flagship model from 2006 to 2008 and had a curb weight rating of 14,500 pounds. Navigators are always heavy. Weight started at 11,900 pounds in 2006, jumped to 15,000 pounds in 2007, and stayed at that level until 2009. Small sedans and crossovers are lighter. The MKX started at 6,370 pounds in 2007 and went up to 7,350 pounds in 2008. Town Cars always weigh around 6,460 to 6,502 pounds. The new 2009 MKS is surprisingly light, with a GCWR of 5,277 pounds.
Mazda GCWR
Mazda’s truck lineup is built on a Ford platform, and the ratings reflect that. B-series trucks are common. The B2300 weighs approximately 4744-4800 lbs. The B4000 weighs 6973-7000 lbs. The crossover segment has grown. The CX-9 gained 6,826 pounds in 2007 and dropped 6,484 pounds in 2009. The CX-7 remains at 5,860 pounds. The Tribute was light, hovering near 4,800 pounds. Depending on the year, the Mariner Hybrid is slightly heavier than the gasoline version, but both are under 5,000 pounds. Mazdaspeed models do not have a GCWR rating.
Mercedes-Benz GCWR
Mercedes’ annual performance is puzzling. In 2006, the ML350 was rated at 6,773 pounds. And in 2007, the ML350’s weight jumped to 12,056 pounds. It’s almost double. This looks like a gap in the data or an early major reclassification. Weights for ML-class V8 and AMG models typically range from 12,000 to 12,500 lbs. The ML63 AMG weighs a flat 12,443 pounds. The GL grade debuted in 2007 and climbed to 13,084 pounds in 2009. The G500 and G55 weigh in at 12,600 pounds. Introduced in 2009, the R-Series weighs 8,590 pounds, a significant drop compared to SUVs.
Mercury GCWR
Mercury is actually Ford with a different badge. The ratings are very close to similar Ford products. The Grand Marquis has grown with age, going from 5,688 pounds in 2006 to 6,600 pounds in 2009. The Mountaineer went from 8,111 pounds to 8,217 pounds, where it stayed until 2009. The Mariner was light, staying under 5,000 pounds. The Monterey minivan was rated at 7,990 pounds. There are no numbers for Milan. In 2008, the Sable was introduced at a lighter weight of 4,793 pounds.
Mini GCWR
MINI is designed for city driving and tight corners. From 2006 to 2009, Cooper hardtops, convertibles, and Clubmans did not receive a GCWR rating. Even the high-performance John Cooper Works version has no stated towing capacity. You weren’t towing a Mini.
Mitsubishi GCWR
Mitsubishi’s towing numbers were modest. The Endeavor’s weight varies widely, starting at 7,519 kg and dropping to 6,108 kg, then back to 7,552 kg. The Outlander is lighter, starting at 4,891 pounds and settling in around 5,000-5,600 pounds. The Raider is basically a Dodge Ram and weighs around 8583-8600 pounds. Eclipse and Galant had no ratings. The Lancer appeared briefly in 2006 at 3,895 pounds, but then disappeared.
Nissan GCWR
The Nissan lineup of this era showed a clear distinction between commuter sedans and large trucks. In small cars like the 2006-2009 Sentra and 350Z, GCWR is negligible or non-existent. You won’t have to tow anything with the 2006 Sentra (GVW limit is 3,663 pounds) or the 2009 Altima Hybrid (4,620 pounds).
Weightlifters tell a different story. Armada’s features have been significantly improved. In 2006 it was valued at 11,818 lbs. By 2008, the figure had risen to 15,100 lbs. The Titan’s weight has also steadily increased from 11,465 pounds in 2006 to 11,688 pounds in 2008. Frontiers vary between 10,676 and 11,133 pounds depending on the year.
“The 2008 Nissan Armada’s GCWR jumps to 15,100 lbs, a huge year-over-year increase.”
